The course
A full-year Grade 8 math course built on BC's five Big Ideas and six units. We start with number sense and computational fluency, then build toward algebra, geometry, and data. Read the full course outline →
What you'll be able to do
Work confidently with fractions and roots, reason with ratios and percent, write and solve equations, measure 3D shapes, and make sense of data. You'll explain your thinking in pictures, symbols, and words.
How you're graded
Grade 8 math is reported on BC's Proficiency Scale — Emerging, Developing, Proficient, Extending. No letter grades, no percentages. Practice is redoable, and your grade reflects your most recent, best work. What the scale means →
Tutorials — extra help
Room 2035. Tuesday to Friday, 8:28–9:10 AM — drop in, no appointment needed. Mondays are limited and need an appointment, so ask me the class before. Come with a question, a stuck problem, or work to catch up on.
Bring daily
A binder with lined and grid paper and a pencil and eraser. No calculator — this course is calculator-free, including the final exam. A device is welcome for graphing and looking things up. That's it — come ready to think and try.
The six units
Integers and their four operations, then adding, subtracting, multiplying and dividing fractions, and order of operations for both.
Rates, ratios, proportions, percents under 1 and over 100; financial literacy — best buys.
Discrete linear relations, writing and evaluating expressions, solving two-step equations.
Perfect squares and cubes; square and cube roots; the Pythagorean theorem they set up.
Surface area and volume of right prisms and cylinders; nets and views of 3D objects.
Central tendency — mean, median, mode; theoretical probability with two independent events.
